This online webinar is an introduction to Clinical Qigong (i.e., Medical Qigong). We cover a basic overview of the history and role of pre-Qigong practices in East Asian Medicine and longevity traditions, and discuss the modern application of the techniques in an East Asian Medicine clinical setting. We will focus on the original patient practice approach rather than external Qi healing, as this latter, while with some history, is mostly a modern invention dating back only a few decades. We will conclude with an experiential segment to orient participants. Participants who are interested in continued training can participate in our 30 hours full course on Clinical Qigong.

Regulating Endocrine Dysfunctions with Tung’s Acupuncture

Endocrine disorders are common conditions that are often resistant to treatment. One reason for this is that they are complex problems with numerous and difficult patterns, such as blood stasis. Tung's acupuncture is an excellent treatment option for these conditions because it allows clinicians to select and implement needle protocols that use a small number of points while still addressing complex and chronic cases. Participants in this course will learn about common endocrine disorders and how to use key Master Tung's points and protocols to address them.

This course will begin with an overview of endocrine health before moving on to commonly used Master Tung's acupuncture points and treatment strategies for endocrine disorders such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, PCOS, metabolic disorders, and so on.

Tung's Acupuncture Guide to Men's Health

Men's health can be a sensitive subject as some men may find it uncomfortable to consult a physician about a health issue, preferring to avoid it entirely. Hoping that these health concerns will go away on their own, they tend to resurface in the future, making them even more of a nuisance. It is in our patients' best interests as healthcare practitioners to be proactive in identifying barriers and other causative factors affecting optimal health. We can identify and remedy deficiencies affecting health through effective TCM differential diagnosis and use of Master Tung's acupuncture. Learn how to use Master Tung's acupuncture to create a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to each patient's specific needs.

This course will begin with an explanation of core theories that underlie Tung's acupuncture and then continue with commonly used points and treatment strategies in sexual health, which includes reproductive disorders (infertility and prostate issues), as well as urological conditions (kidney/bladder).

Tung Acupuncture with focus on pain management and a masterclass on the 5 Transport Points

Due to the current Coronavirus pandemic these classes have been moved to an online format! Please join us…

Tung’s Acupuncture for Pain Management – Theoretical Foundations

Tung’s acupuncture is a classic medical system that makes extensive use of extra points not known in conventional acupuncture. Much more important, however, is the in-depth theory underlying this practice – a theory that is informed by a deep understanding of classical acupuncture practice based in Yin-Yang, Five Phases, Zang-Fu and Channel concepts.

In this class we will present a deep look at the theory underlying Tung’s acupuncture. In doing so we will explore channel and Zang-Fu relationships, concepts of the unity of humans to the natural world, and how to exploit these relationships in the therapeutic application of needles. We then discuss some of the most commonly used points in pain management, a look at global Zang-Fu treatment strategies, and a short theoretical introduction to bloodletting. We will also discuss how these theoretical guidelines and treatment strategies provide a deeper understanding of conventional acupuncture points.

A Master Class on the Five Transport Points

The five transport points are some of the most commonly used acupuncture points. Nevertheless, few modern therapists have a truly comprehensive understanding of how important these points really are, and how they are used to treat complex Zang-Fu or channel patterns. The Nan Jing even goes so far as to urge most illnesses to be treated only with these points! This course begins with an overview of classic text references and provides a thorough analysis of how the five transport points are used in practice. We will discuss the Qi dynamics of these points, as they are based on symptoms or time based relationships, and the effective selection of points for supplementing or draining the channels. Then we look at the relationship between Tung’s points and the five transport points and the integration of the latter within Tung’s paradigms. Hands on practice of pulse diagnosis will be done during our November course..

Course is taught in English (German translation has been cancelled for the online course). The course documents are in English. Please also note time zone differences for those not in Germany!

World Tai Chi (Taiji) and Qigong Day 2019

Qigong and Tai Chi (Taiji) are treasures of traditional Chinese health and physical cultivation culture. In the United States, the last Saturday of April each year is celebrated as World Tai Chi & Qigong day. This is done for several purposes:

  1. To educate the world of the profound health & healing benefits of Tai Chi & Qigong for individuals, communities, and nations,

  2. To thank Chinese culture for creating and sharing these profoundly valuable gifts with the world; and

  3. To bring together people across racial, economic, religious, and geo-political boundaries, to join together for the purpose of health and healing, providing an example to the world.

The reasons to practice Qigong and Tai Chi are numerous, and modern research has shown them effective in maintaining health as well as in treating a number of diseases, including high blood pressure, diabetes, anxiety and depression, arthritis, knee pain, back pain, and fibromyalgia, just to name a few. The bigger picture is that Qigong and Tai Chi practice creates a dynamic balance in the body that supports our natural vitality.

This year we will celebrate World Tai Chi & Qigong Day on Saturday, April 27 from 9-10am with a free class that is open to all who would like to attend. People of any experience level are welcomed, include those with no prior experience at all.

This year's class will start with some gentle exercises that increase and circulate Qi, our individual innate vital energy. Then we will practice, as a group, the 24 Movement Hunyuan Basic form. Master Tung Acupuncture - Harmonizing the Seasons with Needles and Food

The Chinese seasonal calendar divides the year into four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Each season is then further divided into six stages, with a total of 24 phases each year. Each phase lasts approximately 15 days and is determined by the position of the sun. Each time the sun advances 15 degrees around Earth, a new phase begins.

A major teaching of the ancient Chinese medical classics is how humans should live in harmony with themselves, with each other, and with the natural world. One of the most important methods of living a long and healthy life is to understand the basic patterns of the natural world and live in a way that moves with, rather than against, these patterns. If seasonal foods that are similar in nature to the external environment are consumed, we are in harmony with the environment and can adapt better to changes in the season and stay healthy. For example, in the Huang Di Nei Jing (or Neijing for short), it says, “in Spring and Summer nourish Yang, and in Autumn and Winter nourish Yin.”

In this course, author of Practical Atlas of Tung's Acupuncture and Pricking the Vessels: Bloodletting Therapy in Chinese Medicine, Dr. Henry McCann, a Master Tung’s acupuncture practitioner passionate about researching and sharing the Nourishing Life tradition of Chinese medicine, starts with an introduction of yin-yang, the 5 phases, and the seasons. He then describes the 24 seasonal nodes, and why it is important to eat according to the season. Lastly, he reveals what foods to consume and what not to consume during each of the seasonal nodes.

Upon completion of this course, practitioners will:

  • Understand what are the 24 seasonal phases

  • Learn why it is important to eat according to the season

  • Learn what food to consume during the appropriate seasonal node

Advanced Applications of Tung's Acupuncture

Master Tung is widely celebrated as one of the greatest acupuncturists in the modern era. While the system he taught was previously transmitted only within very closed circles, he made the decision to disseminate this knowledge more widely in order to raise the general level of medical practice. Fast-forwarding several decades, we now have many books and resources, and many great teachers granting access to this highly practical system to interested acupuncturists all over the world.

Tung's system is praised for its clinical effectiveness, and is often transmitted as simply using points that are associated with symptoms. Dr. Henry McCann's background as a scholar of the Han classics allow him to go deeper in order to elucidate the theoretical principles and therapeutic strategies that underlie and guide Master Tung's system. In this lecture Dr. McCann will teach combinations of Master Tung acupuncture for specific applications.

Daoist Neigong & Paida Gong for the Channels

Paida Gong is the practice of patting the body to move and strengthen the Qi mechanism. This classical method of Qigong combines static standing and moving exercises with channel stimulation to systematically work each primary channel, and the Du and Ren vessels.  As part of the patting exercise we use a special herbal sack that contains a Daoist lineage formula. The practice not only strengthens the body and prevents disease, but also gives acupuncturists a true sense of Qi movement that enhances treatment ability. In addition to the Paida Gong we will also practice Daoist Neigong standing and moving postures to enhance Qi absorption and circulation. This is a rare opportunity to learn classical body-mind cultivation practices in a small group setting tailored to Chinese medicine students and practitioners. Open to PCOM students, faculty and alumni.
